Learning Digitally: Empowerment with Responsbility

This week at my school, Beijing BISS International School here in Beijing China, I was invited to be the 'distinguished speaker' of the month. I was asked to provide a 'parent friendly' topic about getting to know the online world of children, providing insight as well as solutions to characteristics of the 'net generation'.

So, if you know me at all you will understand I am not one to talk about 'dangers' at great length, but prefer to talk in more positive terms, and put the responsibility back on the parent and the student, and prefer education and raised awareness in favour of restricted use of resources.  My talk, entitled "Learning Digitally: Empowerment with Responsibility" was designed in four parts:
  1. Part 1 - Understanding he digital generation.
  2. Part 2 - Advantages of technology.
  3. Part 3 - Digital citizenship.
  4. Part 4 - Strategies and solutions for common parental concerns.
My wiki has a list of resources, and here is the slideshow.  Your comments are welcome as to how I can improve this next time around.

I found this to be a very interesting article. The title caught my attention immediately. The idea of empowerment with responsibility is just awesome.

Thanks for sharing Julie!

I love your strategies for Parents - may I please use some of them (with attribution of course) them for our upcoming workshop with ISB parents called "Living Safe on the Web: The Good, The Bad and the downright ugly!

Chrissy, thanks for commenting on my presentation. Yes, please use the strategies. Can I ask you to also add your presentation to our DigiParents Ning at http://digiparent.ning.com/ so we can build up a collection of resources. You may even invite your parents to join this Ning and create an ISB group if you like. I would be doing this in China wtih our parent workshops excpet that Ning has been blocked again recently (!!).

Good to hear from you!

Thank you so much Julie for sharing this presentation! There are so many things in it that my school is trying to convey to parents and families. Technology is not something parents should be afraid of, and many of the simple steps - like focusing on HOW TO USE rather than WHAT TECH CAN DO - is such a powerful message to parents. Also, I'm very much a fan of putting computers in family spaces versus private rooms. It's an easy step for digital accountability. Thanks again.
