NetGen Education Project

Award winning global collaborators Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis (co founders of the Flat Classroom Project) are excited to announce the 2012 NetGenEd Project, another global collaboration to envision the future of education and social action by inspiring today's students to study leading technology trends and create their vision for the future.

In this project, students will study and "mash up" the results of the 2012 Horizon Report from the New Media Consortium and Educause and Tapscott's book Grown Up Digital: How the Net Generation is Changing Your World. Students will study the current research and create wiki-reports with their student partners around the world analyzing current trends and projecting future happenings based upon this collaborative analysis. This project is managed by the students who assume roles such as project manager, assistant project manager, and editors of the various wikis.

After compiling their wiki reports based upon current research, and encouraged by "expert advisors" (subject matter experts in the industry), students will then create a video based upon their research in current global technological trends.

Global collaboration starts with connecting yourself to the world. Students are the greatest textbook ever written for each other. The same is true for teachers. We are passionate about connecting and facilitating effective collaborations between classrooms because we’ve seen the power of how it can engage students and teach them the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century.

We want to bring in people who are nervous, who don’t know how, or who have tried to connect and were frustrated. We also want to bring back those teachers who tried it and got burned out. Now it is time to enlarge the circle of global collaborative excellence in a massive way.

It is our vision that if we can have enough educators linking together and learning about this at the same time, that a natural byproduct will be the creation of many new, exciting global collaborations. It is time to get past the cute stories of global collaboration into the nuts and bolts of the pedagogy that makes it happen. (Although there are a lot of powerful stories to tell.)

To help facilitate this conversation, we felt like that it would be best if we, the authors (Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis), step aside, and invite our friends Ben Curran and Neil Wetherbee of @engaginged to facilitate the conversation. They’ve done book clubs before and this is another pedagogy that we want to work out: that of having a book club that is truly global. We’d like to do this to promote conversations that transcend borders. The easiest way to get this out of the box is to get out of the classroom and connect with other educators.

Every week for 10 weeks we will meet at an alternating time - 12 hours apart. (For the East Coast USA it is Sundays at 6 pm Eastern or Monday mornings at 6 am eastern - Visit our Book club calendar to convert these times to your Time Zone. While you are welcome to just “drop in” you can register with the Book club mailing list and we’ll remind you each week about the session, let you know who is coming, and we’ll mention any special events that we’ll be having as part of the launch. If you run your own book club, you’re welcome to come by the club anytime for ideas and discussion points.

The hashtag for our conversations is #flatclass and the book club is, of course, free. Anyone can join us. There’s no homework - just conversation and learning. We’ll all be there to discuss the future of education with each other. We hope global collaborators from around the world will join us and share their stories too. Conversations will hinge around our new book, Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds. The book will be available in ebook format, although we’re not sure yet which ebook formats.

How will this global book club work? Will it really transform my teaching?

Have you ever read a book about teaching and thoroughly enjoyed it, only to get done and ask yourself "Now what?" Or maybe you've read something that was motivating, inspirational and chock-full of ideas, only to find after sharing it with colleagues that they "just aren't that into it?" If so, this book club is for you. We hope it will be a gathering of inspired, motivated, similarly driven friends from around the globe.

Here's how it will work...each week we will focus on approximately one chapter. Each meeting will be divided roughly into three parts. The first part will focus on implementation--how all of us have or can implement the main theme of the week. We'll also dive into and discuss the activities (Vicki and Julie refer to them as "challenges") that are embedded in the book. The second part will be more of an open forum for everyone to discuss other topics in the chapter or other issues pertaining to the subject. This will be a great time for making connections with other teachers for possible collaborations and getting answers to questions that you have. Finally, and perhaps what we are most excited about is that each week we hope to be joined by the friends mentioned in each chapter. They will be able to share their firsthand insight on the weekly topic as well as stories from their own experiences.

On top of all this, Engaging Educators will be providing short, free “boot camp” style webinars along the way to help you master some of the topics that might be new to you.

What we hope to facilitate is a perfect companion to Julie and Vicki's book, an experience that goes beyond "just reading" and demonstrates what a network of connected educators can learn and accomplish.

Tech Ed-dy » Global Collaboration Course

As part of this course you will have a chance to examine the different global collaborative opportunities available to teachers, and explore the teacher skills, student skills and appropriate pedagogy needed to turn those connections into an authentic, collaborative learning experience. We will also review some of the tools that help classrooms connect effectively.

The course has been designed by Phil Macoun (@pmacoun) and Brad Ovenell-Carter (@braddo). Phil has participated in the Digiteen project for 4 years and is currently enrolled in the Flat Classroom Certified Teacher program. Brad spent last year as head of Think Global, a school where students explore our world, studying in three new international cities each academic year.

We are also very excited to have Julie Lindsay joining us for a webinar on Saturday January 7th at 4:00 pm PST (click here to find out the time where you live). You do not have to be registered in the course to attend the webinar. Julie will be talking about her new book called Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds: Move to Global Collaboration One Step at a Time.

The course is in Moodle and runs from January 6th to 11th. If you haven’t participated in a Moodle Meet before here’s your chance! Except for the webinar the course is asynchronous. This means that you can pop in and out of the course at times that suit you best.

"Welcome to Collaborative Writing in the Classroom, a project sponsored by Eye On Education featuring Vicki Davis, Cool Cat Teacher.

Collaborative Writing in the Classroom, scheduled to be released in 2012, will provide a showcase of best practices from across the country that improve student writing using tools like wikis and Google docs.

In her book, Vicki will pull from her extensive experience on her award-winning wikis and global collaborations to show how collaborative writing can be simple and doable. She wants to hear your stories, too! After all, Eye On Education isn't just a book publisher but a community of educators who want real ways to improve their classrooms.

We are asking for your collaborative writing stories!

We invite you to submit an example from your classroom that demonstrates how your students have used wikis, Google Docs, or other tools for the purpose of collaborative content creation.

Zero to Eight: Children's Media Use in America | Common Sense Media

The study shows that everything from iPods to smartphones to tablet computers are now a regular part of kids' lives, with kids under 8 averaging two hours a day with all screen media. Among the key findings:

42% of children under 8 years old have a television in their bedroom.
Half (52%) of all 0- to 8-year-olds have access to a new mobile device, such as a smartphone, video iPod, or iPad/tablet.
More than a third (38%) of children this age have used one of these devices, including 10% of 0-to 1-year-olds, 39% of 2- to 4-year-olds, and more than half (52%) of 5- to 8-year-olds.
In a typical day, one in 10 (11%) 0- to 8-year-olds uses a smartphone, video iPod, iPad, or similar device to play games, watch videos, or use other apps. Those who do such activities spend an average of 43 minutes a day doing so.
In addition to the traditional digital divide, a new "app gap" has developed, with only 14% of lower-income parents having downloaded new media apps for their kids to use, compared to 47% of upper-income parents.

Clearly, media has become a staple in young kids' daily lives and influences them in ways we don't yet fully understand. But by getting involved in your kid's media life, you can help them create healthy lifelong patterns that will truly make a difference in their lives

Sounding Board Classrooms wanted for Flat Classroom Project November 2011

The current Flat Classroom Project 11-3 is inviting classrooms from Grade 6 and above to become Sounding Boards for the student collaborative wikis. All details are on the Sounding Board information wiki. We also invite you to join the Flat Classroom Project Ning and the SB group.

We have over 400 students in this project collaborating across 11 wikis. The skill of providing feedback as a sounding board classroom aligns with ISTE NETS.S 2. 'Communication and Collaboration' - '...to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others'.

Becoming a Sounding Board classroom is not time draining. 2-3 lessons will probably be enough to devote to this, less for older students. It will provide a great opportunity for you and your class to examine collaborative research work critically using the Peer Evaluation techniques developed by Flat Classroom educators.

Hello to E-Learning Journey readers! My summer is over....and I am back to the blog, the one I care about so much but have sorely neglected in the past few weeks. Stay tuned for some sharing and updates re my summer adventures, and for lots of news about our projects and book! Stay with me...there is lot to discuss and exciting times to look forward to this coming year.

Press release: Flat Classroom® Projects!

Applications are invited now for a selection of internationally recognised and award winning global projects run by Flat Classroom® to start in September 2011. Co-founders Vicki Davis and Julie Lindsay are excited to be offering these opportunities for classrooms globally to connect, co-create and learn together in a carefully designed and supported digital environment.

The Digiteen™ Project explores digital citizenship through interaction and provides an opportunity for students to not only talk about digital citizenship, but experience via online connection, collaboration, shared research and presentation. It also has an action project component where a classroom designs an action to be carried out in their own school community and then shared back to the global partnership.

The Flat Classroom® Project is designed to develop cultural understanding, skills with Web 2.0 and other software, experience in global collaboration and online learning, awareness of what it means to live and work in a flat world, while researching and discussing the ideas developed in Friedman's book.

The ‘A Week in the Life...’ Project aims to join Elementary School classrooms globally with a view to exploring what life is like in each area/country through discussion, sharing and collecting multimedia to create final products together. The curriculum focus is Interdisciplinary, how we live, how we communicate, cultural understanding and awareness.

Entry to a each project is via application and subscription. In order to help meet the subscription price, teachers can apply for a limited number of sweat equity positions as ‘lead teachers’.

An International Journey

This is a narration of my journey as an international educator. It has taken a couple of different forms and I am sharing these via this blog post.

From the book co-written by my friend and colleague, Vicki Davis and me, 'Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds: Move to Global Collaboration One Step at a Time'
Written in Beijing, China June 2011.

“Come and teach in the real Africa,” was the advertisement that inspired my husband and me to apply for and finally accept our first international teaching positions in Zambia, January 1998. Our daughter, Violet, was three. We sold up most of our worldly possessions in hometown Melbourne, Australia and left for Africa on our new adventure. We are still out there, over fourteen years and five countries later (Zambia, Kuwait, Bangladesh, Qatar and now China), experiencing in addition to Australian, also British and International Baccalaureate curriculum while exploring and embracing diverse cultural differences.
Zambia was also my first position as a computer teacher. Yes, before that I was a music teacher, dabbling in technology for performance and composition. However, this book is not about my journey alone, it is about the journey of many who are willing to ‘push the envelope’ or be pushed into learning experiences that significantly alter personal perceptions of how the world works and how we can work together to make it a better place.

The Internet changed everything. As an early adopter I still remember, in the mid 1990’s, organizing my school community at Eltham College, Melbourne, to arrive at 5am to hear via live broadcast the outcome of the International School’s Cyberfair (website design to unite and take action) competition. Our school had been shortlisted for the Environment award, and we gained an honorable mention, as announced personally by Al Gore at that ceremony. This was an exciting achievement for the school and on that day I reflected on the looks of incredulity when I announced weeks before in the staffroom I had entered the school in a global project, ‘But do the students know how to create a website?’, ‘What does it mean to share online?’ ‘What do you mean ‘global’’?

Other memories include running an ‘Internet Club’ as an after school activity at Simba School, Zambia where around the change of the millennium we participated in iEARN learning circle projects. This was an environment where the only computer allowed on the Internet at that time (by directive of our school head) was in a locked room in the library, with the non-networked computer lab being a good 5 minute walk away. This did not deter us!

My life changed again when Vicki Davis and I started the Flat Classroom® Project. I was in Bangladesh in a 1:1 school with wireless Internet access and with students who were studying the impact of technology on society. In addition Web 2.0 was emerging as a platform for communication and collaboration. The time was ripe to embark on something new that could be scaffolded by the new online technologies and could join students across the globe in meaningful learning experiences. As we joined our classrooms we shared audio introductions, posted images, instant messaged, and connected in real time via Skype. The challenge of working through time zones and cultural differences were often subliminal but omnipresent. Conversations, both synchronous and asynchronous took place during the intense project working time. Like boring a hole right through the center of the earth, students reached out, desperate for connection and confirmation that there was someone else on the other side willing to respond and work with them.

Very early on we saw the concept, power and magic of connecting with others globally and the difference it was making to learning, including stereotypical attitudes and behaviors. Not only did we keep developing new projects but we had a dream to bring students and teachers together face-to-face to cement collaborative relationships and work on action ideas. If the impact of global collaboration was evident in an asynchronous project, we imagined the opportunity for growth if we could get students and teachers working together in the same place at the same time. Our dream came true in Qatar 2009, when the first Flat Classroom Conference changed lives and cast a vision for the future.

Being an international educator, and having a daughter as a ‘third culture kid’ (with educator parents), I selfishly want others around the world to experience what we are privileged to live. I want them to be confronted with different religious and cultural beliefs and be immersed in an environment where English (or their own language) is not spoken and where simple communication can often result in highly creative sign language. I want them to acknowledge and respect differences and learn how to use their personal strengths to create a bond of understanding with new friends. I want them to question, doubt, be amazed, experience alternative lifestyles, treasure similarities, and learn how to get on with other people globally. I want them to be able to do this without losing their own identity and sense of belonging to a country or to a culture, and without feeling superior or inferior to any other person.

Through Flat Classroom® we are building bridges, forging new pedagogies, and questioning current education systems that place value on content above process and individual output and gain rather than on collaboration and community learning for understanding. This book is a part of the bridge and we encourage you to learn from the stories and apply it in your own learning situation. I encourage you to embrace your our own global journey.

Technology Integration Matrix

"The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. "A Week in the Life...." - Finding Perspective

Classrooms from Canada, USA, South Korea and Qatar are more than half way through the "A Week in the Life…"11-1 project this semester (a Flat Classroom Project for Elementary School students). Cross-classroom teams are collecting multimedia to represent the main topics:

School time
Languages & Clothing
Housing & Transportation
Leisure time
Food & Celebrations
Environment

Teacher leaders for each team are supporting collaborative conversations via wiki discussion tabs and in Edmodo, our first point for networking and community building, but continuing to develop as a place to share resources and ideas.

It is important at this stage of the project to find and maintain perspective. Yes, we have limited time left in the school year, one class has about 2 weeks I think! Yes, we now have multimedia flying in all directions causing some confusion and stress as to what is the best way to collate and present so that meaningful knowledge is gained from it. Yes, we continue to be challenged by communication and collaboration strategies while using Web 2.0 tools. However, let’s step back for a minute and look at the bigger picture.

Students and teachers who did not know each other before are now WORKING TOGETHER! yes, connecting, communicating, collaborating….as though they are one classroom. Some classes have initiated real-time Skype sessions to further cement this connection and add extra engagement to the classroom as an activity. In the background teachers are meeting once a week in a virtual classroom (currently Elluminate) to discuss all aspects of the project, to support each other and to move this collaboration to a conclusion. Yesterday the online meeting was 5:30am China (my time….and actually a good time for me as the alarm always goes off at 5am in our house, but I try to limit myself to ONE 5:30am meeting per week); 6:30 am in Sth Korea for Nick (he was talking from the kitchen waiting for his family to come in for breakfast); almost midnight for Robyn in Qatar!, and late in the evening for Nancy in Prague!; while on the other side of the world it was mid to late afternoon for USA and Canada, with after school meetings, transport needs etc. I am always amazed at how dedicated Flat Classroom teachers fit our meetings into their already overloaded day.

So, back to perspective…….This project is a chance to leave a small legacy, a snapshot of how the world is now. I was amazed at learning about the Doomsday Project this week, where after 25 years historical data is being accessed. This project is or can be very much like this. In 25 years from now, students can access our project archives and see and hear what a day in the life is really like in different parts of the world. I encourage all teachers and teams to keep this in mind as you work towards the end. How will others view this? Have you clearly explained the artifacts and linked them in creative ways? Have you reflected on them and asked further questions of your team classrooms?

The GeoHistorian Project

The Geo-Historian project is aimed at educating K-12 students to become local historians who create digital content for an audience that transcends the walls of their classrooms. Project activities include the creation of curriculum on how to do digital, local history, training teachers how to apply it in their classrooms, and implementation in local schools. Thinking Global with TGS and Yong Zhao

Student and teachers at Beijing BISS International School are always open to learn from and with the world and embrace those who can bring a richer global perspective to our community.

This spring term at BISS we are delighted to welcome the Think Global School (TGS) as residents in the Language Center until the end of June. TGS is a school with an amazing vision, planning to learn in 12 different countries over 4 years, and developing globally minded individuals through experiential learning. Being in its first year students with TGS come from all over the world, are in Grade 9, and will continue through until the end of High School. So far this year they have been to Stockholm and Sydney. We are planning to connect and collaborate across the curriculum while they are here and hope to learn from and with them. Recent joint activities include a ‘getting to know us’ buddy workshop, as well as the Global Issues, team based event.

As a direct result of TGS being resident at BISS we had the unique opportunity this week to welcome to the school Dr Yong Zhao, who is currently the Presidential Chair and Associate Dean for Global and Online Education, University of Oregon, as well as the director of the Center for Advanced Technology in Education (CATE). He is a fellow of the International Academy for Education and the author of ‘Catching Up or Leading the Way’. TGS invited Yong to China to speak to the wider community on Monday evening here in Beijing, in a presentation entitled ‘Students as Global Entrepreneurs’. We invited him to come to a less formal gathering of BISS students and teachers and share his insights with us.

Yong talked about the ‘death of distance’ and how technology now supports communication and learning in a variety of forms, cutting through isolation and broadening our opportunities. He talked about the impact of globalization on the future job market, and encouraged students to create their own jobs rather than be content to study for an occupation that may be obsolete soon. His enthusiasm was infectious, and his message included words such as motivation, confidence, passion, innovation, entrepreneurship, global competencies, cultural intelligences….and more!

I was particularly impressed with how Yong interacted with the younger audience and coaxed responses and ideas from individuals who were often reticent. He is also a great storyteller and shared experiences of his younger life in China. His perception of the China-USA education systems is intuitive. After synthesizing other current day thinkers and writers such as Thomas Friedman (The World is Flat) and Daniel Pink (A Whole New Mind), Yong proposed his own interpretation of the need for creativity and global thinking, along with less meaningless and regimented testing, in education in order to cater for future social development and prosperity.

What’s the difference between a computer simulation and a backyard game of tag? Quite honestly, not much – which is exactly why we, as educational media designers, have failed three decades of curious kids (with some notable exceptions). Interactive quizzes and digital flash cards may make content more exciting than their analog counterparts, but that’s a short-sighted approach that fails to get at the root problem, an extrinsic motivation when kids are already intrinsically motivated to learn. The fundamental problem is not that learning isn’t fun, it’s that we’re answering questions that kids aren’t asking (Who?, What?, When?, Where?) instead of giving them tools to experiment, build on, and share their own ideas. The problem is that we’re trying to replace teachers and parents with software rather than giving them complementary tools to help them become facilitators and coaches instead of test administrators.

The Importance of Affecting Change from Within - ISTE Board Elections - Vote Now!

It often comes as a surprise to people that Australia has compulsory voting in political elections. As a former high school (HSC 1977 Politics) and undergraduate student in politics (minor study) I have always had a great interest in political scenarios globally, and I have always taken great responsibility when voting. The opportunity to vote means taking some time to review candidates, consider their experience and perspective, and to reflect on what position they will potentially take on and how they can contribute to that organisation and become part of the team.

Be a part of the change you want to see in the world, and as in the message of this blog post, the change you want to see in educational technology, and use your voice and VOTE in the ISTE elections.

The ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Board elections are an opportunity for all ISTE members to have their say, and to take responsible measures to populate the Board with the best candidates they can. Although not compulsory, it is something that this organisation feels strongly about and encourages everyone to use their voice and vote for the next new Board members.

As a long-standing member of ISTE (must be about 10 years now I think), and as an ISTE Ambassador, I am honored to accept nomination as International representative on the ISTE Board and encourage you to consider voting for me! In addition, I ask that you also consider voting for Australian colleague, Tony Brandenburg, as an 'At Large' representative on the Board. My friend and Flat Classroom co-founder, Vicki Davis, wrote a humbling blog post, ISTE Members: I am asking you to vote for Julie, that says this is not a vote against anyone else, as all candidates are amazing and highly qualified, but this is a chance to show support for international candidates in particular.

Learning Digitally: Empowerment with Responsbility

This week at my school, Beijing BISS International School here in Beijing China, I was invited to be the 'distinguished speaker' of the month. I was asked to provide a 'parent friendly' topic about getting to know the online world of children, providing insight as well as solutions to characteristics of the 'net generation'.

So, if you know me at all you will understand I am not one to talk about 'dangers' at great length, but prefer to talk in more positive terms, and put the responsibility back on the parent and the student, and prefer education and raised awareness in favour of restricted use of resources. My talk, entitled "Learning Digitally: Empowerment with Responsibility" was designed in four parts:

Part 1 - Understanding he digital generation.
Part 2 - Advantages of technology.
Part 3 - Digital citizenship.
Part 4 - Strategies and solutions for common parental concerns.

Special Announcement - International Audience Votes for Most Successtul Projects

One exciting outcome of the Flat Classroom Conference 2011, held here in Beijing a few weeks ago, is the production of student films that attempt to share each teams ideas created from the action project as part of the Student Summit.

The top 6 teams had a chance to create these films, which we then put out there for an international vote. We now have the 'winners', and I put this in inverted commas, as ALL teams have great ideas and very successfully created the multimedia to communicate these. However, here are the four that have caught the attention of the international viewers as being the ones having the most potential if implemented.

Third place (tied): Team 1 Culture Connect and Team 6 Clear Water

In addition, Leadership Workshop teams of educators also created new curriculum desugns that integrated global collaboration. Here is the project voted as the best!

Connect, Communicate, Change - A Conference with a Difference

We are about to start Day 2 of the Flat Classroom Conference 2011 here in Beijing, China. Already the Student Summit has been meeting for 1.5 days and teams are working furiously towards their 'animatic' presentation before lunch today. The Leadership strand have provided feedback to the student teams for their oral pitch of concepts and ideas. They have also developed their own curriculum ideas for implementing a project or idea that joins classrooms around the world and flattens the classroom walls and will pitch these to student teams this morning for feedback.
This conference is about global collaboration, it is about flattening the learning experience. Students, teachers, leaders are learning and leading from each other. We are excited, we are exhausted! and we have great expectations for what today will bring!

Don't forget to follow us virtually, both Taking It Global and Beijing Kids have supported us with online spaces to view media.

Students and Educators Prepare for Action!

Press Release Feb 15 – Flat Classroom Conference 2011

Excitement is growing as we approach the time for the Flat Classroom Conference 2011 to start. Hosted by Beijing BISS International School February 24-27, this event will bring to together 250 educators and students from more than 15 countries and 45+ schools and institutions. In true ‘flat’ learning style elementary, secondary and tertiary education converge as participants work through a conference program that inspires them to connect globally and take action back in their own schools.

For the Leadership Workshop, adults will explore collaborative learning modes and emerging technologies that support these while designing new instructional models for immediate use in their own classrooms. These new curriculums and pedagogies that include interaction and true problem solving in collaboration with other classrooms around the world are aimed at developing global citizens who have confidence and knowledge with digital learning environments.

For the Student Summit, nearly 100 students will be challenged by an action project that asks them to envisage solutions to problems they have identified along the theme ‘Our Global Future Living Together’. Working in teams they will pitch ideas to the Leadership strand, then after feedback create a presentation that is a pre-visualization for a multimedia story. After an international vote, the best student teams will work with a Hollywood film producer to create a short movie based on their ideas.

Both teachers and students will work together and learn from each other at key times during the 3-day conference. In particular they will enjoy ‘Ted Talk’ style sessions called Flat Learning Action Talks (FL.A.T.s) where both presenters and students have an opportunity to communicate a passion and a message in 10 min.

Another vital part of the conference is the Virtual Flat Classroom. Supported by Taking IT Global (a global social network for educational collaboration), Flat Classroom organizers have out together an opportunity for any interested teachers and students who cannot come to Beijing to be part of this event. Through video streaming, backchannels, Skype, the use of wikis for collaboration, and other Web 2.0 tools (online tools that are normally free that support connection and collaboration, also called the Read/Write web), virtual participants can observe, interact and in fact become full team members if they wish.

Go Virtual! - Strategies for Successful Participation in Virtual Learning

Last November I presented at the Beijing Learning Summit. I have just spent the last 30 min wondering WHY I didn't blog this before, then remembered the Summit was just before the Global Education Conference, and then life just got busier!

So, as we are about to embark on the second ever Flat Classroom Conference, AND as I am about to invite readers of this blog and Flat Classroom enthusiasts to participate virtually, I remembered I had put together information and ideas to do with successful participation in a virtual event.

Let's start with one of my favourite photos, take at the Flat Classroom Workshop in Mumbai February 2010. These students are working in a team BUT the the girl in front is also working with a virtual team member via Skype from Japan.

This picture is taken at the 'Create the Future' Workshop Kim Cofino and I ran last October. I am 'streaming' the presentations via video to our virtual audience who are watching and commenting via the chat.

Strategies for Success: How to go Virtual

Make sure you are connected through the tools - know where to find the streamed video, know how to open the backchannel, know where to find the Twitter conversation amongst the 1000's of other tweets and volumes of social media. A good virtual workshop or conference will have an interface with full instructions. Make sure you study this first and download or open any tools needed beforehand. Using Elluminate for the first time for example takes a few minutes to download.
Contribute to online discussion - Don't just be a lurker! Actively contribute, throw in some links, make some comments and ask questions, participate in the conversation. If you do nothing, you are invisible to others as they cannot SEE you because you are not in the same room. To be visible you must contribute
Participate in group research - If given a chance, try your hand at participating in group research virtually. The first time I did this I was excited to find resources and ideas grow in front of my eyes as my virtual team members added more information
If set up correctly a wiki or collaborative document will allow you to contribute synchronously and/or asynchronously. Remember the differences here, and don't think you have to be synchronous or in real time to be able to contribute. A virtual team member can support a team when the real time, face to face work has finished for the day. Remember, working from China to the USA means you can in fact be developing ideas and resources 24 hours a day!
Jump in a co-create a product - During the Flat Classroom Workshop last July, real and virtual participants co-created presentations and final global project ideas. Nervous at first, participants gained confidence and skills as they juggled tools and timezones!

All details are on the Virtual Participants wiki. There will be two levels of participation:

Level 1: For those who want to make a commitment to a team (students and educators invited)

Level 2: For those who want to come and go and contribute as they have time over the 3-4 days

Partners for the conference, Taking It Global have put together a Virtual Flat Classroom portal through which our Web 2.0 places will feed. I have a tech team at BISS (conference venue) who will be streaming video, we will have a China-friendly backchannel happening and lots of opportunity for exploration and collaboration.

One other VERY GOOD reason to participate virtually is to create new connections for future classroom collaborations. Don't forget to join our Flat Classroom Conference Ning as well!

"With the goal of changing teaching and learning in its classrooms, Singapore's Nanyang Girl's High School has replaced its textbooks with iPad tablet computers.

The school has now ordered some 150 iPads for a selected number of students and teachers for a test run.

Teachers and experts in the field of education and trainers are invited to submit an abstract of a paper to be presented during the Future of Education Conference. The abstract should be written in English (300 – 500 words) and sent via e-mail to edu_future@pixel-online.net no later than 14 February 2011.
